Jeff McClary
Co-founder and leader of S.C.U.T.E., Jeff McClary, passed away on December 28. For 34 years Jeff devoted countless hours rescuing and protecting sea turtles. His leadership and friendship will be greatly missed. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the south end of Pawleys Island. All are welcome.
The first leatherback sighting was about 3 miles offshore Garden City.
5-13-23 Jean probes the first crawl of the season in the PRG section in front of North Beach Villas.
5-13-23 PRG01
5-18 Working together, Lourdes and Pat S. found the egg chamber of PRG02 which was in a good location to leave natural.
5/18 HOB01 was laid in a flat area but was above the high tide line. Tricia and Mitzi left it natural. Unfortunately, there are very few elevated areas to relocate nests on Hobcaw.
5/18 HOB02 was laid below the high tide line and needed relocation. Mitzi and Tricia moved 104 eggs (+1 for DNA) directly back to where Tricia is standing.
5-20-23 This turtle crawled up to the base of a sand fence to put her nest our of harm's way
5-20-23 Carolyn, studying the crawl, located the egg chamber and was happy to leave the nest natural.
5-20-23 This turtle decided not to crawl any further and made a U-turn south #12SS on Hobcaw.
5-20-23 Wendy found a similar U turn false crawl south #16SS. The turtle decided this was not the place for her to nest.
5-30-23 Martha found this turtle dropping her eggs on Hobcaw around 6:00 a.m.
5-30-23 Martha found this turtle dropping her eggs on Hobcaw around 6:00 a.m.
5-30-23 This turtle laid a textbook nest but it was below the high tide line and needed relocation to safer habitat. Martha moved 87 eggs just south of this location.
5-30-23 Good relocation job Martha!
6-2-23 This turtle laid a classic nest.
6-2-23 Judy M. was happy to locate her first egg chamber...HOB04!
6-3-23 HOB04 deposited her clutch at the end of the incoming crawl and then crawled over it after covering with sand.
6-3-23 Some turtles are so determined to lay their nests that they crawl through a maze of dead trees!
6-3-23 HOB05 covered her nest extensively with sand and then crawled back over her incoming tracks.
6-3-23 Seen through the dead trees, HOB05 successfully deposited her nest and Wendy was able to leave it natural.
