May 09, 2012 - No activity

Debordieu SCUTE

There was no turtle activity again this morning but there is always something awe-inspiring on our walks. Carolyn, subbing for Ingrid and Tom, took this great photo of an eagle who likes to scope out the beach from one of the houses at Prince George. Pretty cool to have the national bird perched on your roof!

May 07, 2012 - Rough morning

Debordieu SCUTE

It was a rough morning with no turtle activity. The full moon high tides were made worse today by a nor'easter. The ocean came up to the dunes in many places. The tides have brought in a huge amount of wrack (marsh grass) which, when pushed high enough up on the beach, serves to trap sand and build dunes.

Kathi and Susan, walking Hobcaw, took a photo of the nest at mile marker 9 which has already been washed over. Nests can take about 4-5 washovers and hatch out just fine.

May 06, 2012 - Quiet today

It was another quiet morning with no turtle activity.

The Hobcaw nest is still the only S.C.U.T.E. nest and there are now 14 along the SC coast.

May 05, 2012 - No activity

There was no activity this morning on DeBordieu or Hobcaw Beaches. To date, there are 12 nests on the SC coast.

May 04, 2012 - FIRST NEST! False crawl

Debordieu SCUTE

Records have been broken this morning with the earliest S.C.U.T.E. nest! To date, May 5th was the earliest...back in the 90s.

Hobcaw: Bill had the honors of finding the first nest, a natural, 63 yds. south of the 8 mile marker (photo - check Photo Gallery).

Middle: Mary walking with new volunteer, Jackie, had a false crawl 75 yds. north of Walkway #7. The tracks were the same length, there was no digging or body pit...a basic U turn (see Photo Gallery). This may have been the same turtle that later nested on Hobcaw.

North: Kathi, covering for Ingrid and Tom, had no activity.

May 03, 2012 - All quiet

All was quiet again this morning according to the volunteers. To date, there are 7 turtle nests along the SC coast. All the activity is south of DeBordieu and Hobcaw where the ocean temperatures are a little warmer.

Dicey, our adopted loggerhead, is definitely on the move...check it out!

May 02, 2012 - No activity yet

Debordieu SCUTE

Even with no nesting activity it is always a treat to catch the sunrise on DeBordieu or Hobcaw Beaches. We usually get our first nest when the ocean temperature is about 75 degrees. It is currently 72 degrees so it won't be too long!

May 01, 2012 - Volunteers begin daily surveys

The 2012 turtle season officially began today as volunteers walked the beach at sunrise. There was no activity reported on the North (Beach Club north to Pawleys Inlet), Middle (Beach Club south to Walkway #12) or Hobcaw (Walkway #12 south to North Inlet).
